Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir is a pioneering London gospel choir with a mission: to help spread contemporary gospel music into Catholic, Anglican, and other non-Pentecostal churches, and to bring our unique sound to audiences everywhere.
We want to share the joy, power and soulful groove of contemporary gospel music with people who wouldn’t usually get a chance to experience it.
Gigs and Good Causes
And we sing in lots of other places too. Our public performance credits include the 606 Club, Leicester Square, Marlborough International Jazz Festival, Greenbelt Festival, Big Church Day Out and St Paul's Cathedral.
On Easter Sunday 2019, we appeared on BBC1's 'Britain's Easter Story' describing "The Resurrection", a collection of gospel songs that tells the story of the days after Jesus's crucifixion. We're proud to have performed this groundbreaking piece at London's Legendary Jazz Cafe and to millions on BBC Radio 2 and Radio 4.
Gospel music has the power to soothe, heal and console, and it has been an honour to work with survivors of the Grenfell tragedy, inmates of Wandsworth Prison and a group of refugees with whom we worked on the BBC Radio 4 show Get Up and Flee.
About our music
Soul Sanctuary sings an eclectic range of music – we’re definitely not your typical gospel choir! Our heart is solid gold gospel, with soul, R&B, jazz, Latin and contemporary classical music thrown into the mix too.
It isn’t always easy to find existing gospel music that suits the structured liturgy of a Catholic Mass or an Anglican church service. So as well as performing well known modern gospel music by artists like Kim Burrell, Fred Hammond, Donald Lawrence and Kirk Franklin, we also commission original compositions.
As a result, our extensive repertoire includes five complete gospel Mass settings (Sanctus, Gloria, Kyrie, etc.), a collection of funky and jazzy psalm tones, and more than 50 original songs.
If you are interested in getting access to our unique ‘gospel songbook’ for your choir or church, please get in touch.
Through the joy and beauty of our music and its Christian message, we aim to be a force for real and positive change in the lives of those who hear us. We aim to make mainstream Christian worship accessible, joyful, prayerful and welcoming to newcomers both inside and outside the church; and to bring our rhythmic choral sound to secular music in secular venues.
Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered in England (Registered Charity Number: 1176630). Our charitable activities include our regular monthly appearances at Farm Street Church and St James's Church. They do not include our "hiring" service for weddings and events, session work and workshops which is offered to our talented professionals when they are not volunteering their time to our charitable activities.
We are extremely grateful for any contributions made towards the running of the choir. Find out more about making a donation.
