Soul Sanctuary is an auditioned choir.
We are looking for new singers with a strong sound and a sweet blend, who have experience of singing in a contemporary gospel/soul/R&B style.
Singing with Soul Sanctuary offers some great opportunities and experiences. You’ll be playing your part in our mission to bring gospel music to people and churches (Anglican and Catholic in particular) who don’t normally get the chance to experience it live.
Paid gigs, like weddings, come along for choir members too. And we frequently take on ambitious gigs and projects: like “Lost And Found” at the Liverpool Echo Arena with Frank Cottrell Boyce, “Gospel Nine Lessons and Carols” at St Martin’s in the Fields for BBC Radio 4, “Windrush: Imagining Another World” at Greenbelt, and the Suninsulae Festival in Antigua.
We are a really friendly bunch of people from all walks of life, and there is a strong ‘family’ vibe among the choir members.
Membership of the choir is free. Everyone who joins the choir commits to singing at 75% of all choir dates each year, more than half of which are twice-monthly early evening church services at our two “home” churches in London’s West End (St James’s Piccadilly on the first Sunday of the month, Farm Street Church on the third). Each of these 1-hour services is preceded by a 3-hour rehearsal.
You don’t need to be able to read music, although it can be helpful.
If that sounds like you, we would love to hear from you!
The Audition Process
The first stage is to send us an audio or video clip of you singing. Phone recordings are totally fine! We just want to get a sense of how you sound, and whether there’s a match between your sound and ours.
If you pass the first stage, the next step will be to come along and audition in front of a panel of three of our choir members.
We take pride in holding relaxed and non-scary auditions. Full details on what you need to prepare would be provided in advance, if you got through to this stage.
