Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir has brought the best contemporary gospel to the Mass at Farm Street Church in Mayfair since 2010 and this year marks our 10 year anniversary, singing each month on the third Sunday at 5.30pm. We're proud to bring the invigorating sound of gospel to this setting where it isn't usually heard and last year, in recognition of the unique collaboration between Farm Street Church and the choir, we were visited by BBC One as part of their "Britain's Easter Story" series.
Our spring season this year crosses the church's seasons of Lent and Easter and in the four Sundays that make up the season (March-June), we draw different elements of the service together with a theme.
In March, for example, and while still in Lent, the theme is Meeting Jesus in Unlikely Places because the gospel reading for that day is, John 4, is where Jesus meets the woman at the well. This was someone who was ostracized by her community and reflecting on the reading is a chance to remind ourselves of the limitless love of God through Jesus.
In April, as the weather brightens and warms, the week after Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday, so the theme of that week is The Mercy of God. As always we attempt to bring the choice of gospel songs in line with that month's theme.
For May, we've chosen Gospel Songs for Mary as this month, when the earth springs into bloom, has traditionally been a time to honour Jesus's mother.
In June we will be in full praise mode with Midsummer Gospel Praise: The Light of the World Jesus. In this, the last of our series, we return to gospel's comfort zone: joyful praise of Jesus - the path to light, love and everlasting life!
Father Dominic, the Parish Priest writes: “We’re delighted at Farm Street to extend a very warm invitation to our 5:30 Masses on the third Sundays of each month when we are so blessed to have Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir enliven our worship. Please do know you are most welcome, of whatever Christian tradition or none, to celebrate with us, with Gospel joy and reflective soul. If you haven’t been to church for a while please know you will receive a warm welcome. And please do bring a friend or three as well”.
